I tried the VIRAL potato chip cookie
When sweet meets salty, salty deliciousness
There is nothing more satisfying than when delicious foods collide to make something even more wonderful. Potato + chocolate = the potato chip cookie. And oh my, did it deliver. It may sound a little odd but it is so right.
Crisps, chips or whatever you call them
This again was another recipe that I had saved and was desperate to try. So I took my chance when coming up with filming suggestions for my YouTube channel.
Now, I’ve called them potato chips for my American viewers, but for me it’ll always be a crisp. Same same, but different.
But not just any crisp will do here. You want the posh ones, you know the ones. Think thick-cut, ridged, the kind that usually come in a matte metallic bag (that screams posh).
Let’s talk about the chocolate-covered crisps
To really amp up the potato addition, we took some melted dark chocolate and poured it over a bowl of crisps (those posh ones I mentioned earlier). This coats every crisp wonderfully and I would genuinely just sit and eat this if I could, but sadly I had footage to film. Anyway, you spread them out on a tray to dry and firm up, then sprinke over a bit of flaky salt while they’re still setting.
This is honestly the standard part of the recipe and I want more of this. And as a side note – Ritz Crackers dipped into hot melted chocolate are INCREDIBLE. Please try it and let me know in the comments what you thought?!

Turning crisps into flour
Yes, you can do this. To make this cookie extra potato-y, we took blended plain crisps (this time not the posh ones) and mixed with plain flour to make a fine, carby spud flour. This actually saves you from having to add a pinch of salt to the cookies later on as you’ve got enough in the flour and the chocolate-coated crisps.

The ingredients
- 8 tablespoons melted and cooled salted butter
- 6 ounces dark chocolate
- 6 ounces potato chips/crisps (kettle cooked or thin style), divided
- Flaky sea salt
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 tablespoon boiling water

Want perfect looking cookies?
For those picture-perfect cookies, use an ice cream scoop for the cookie dough. That way you get consistent sizes and that lovely rounded shape.

Other foods that deserve a sneaky potato
Once you start adding crisps/potatoes to things…it’s a slippery slope. A few ideas that absolutely need to happen and that I will be doing:
- Brownies with crushed crisps folded through
- Caramel tart with a crisp crumb base
- Ice cream topped with chocolate-covered crisps
- Peanut butter sandwiches with crisps inside
- Mac & cheese with a crisp topping

Check out my YouTube video below. I take on the duck prawn cracker stack, the cheese-stuffed sweet potatoes and the lasagne jacket potatoes. It was a wonderful journey of recipe exploration and I may have already made some of these again because I mean, they are viral for a reason.
The verdict
6.8/10. Although my family would say 8.9/10, so clearly they enjoyed it a little more)
The cookie had a slightly cakier texture and I personally prefer gooey, but the chocolate-coated chips were a solid 10/10. Love the added saltiness.
I think this recipe would benefit from a few extra choc chunks, maybe even a mix of dark and milk chocolate for balance, but maybe that’s just me being a bit extra. And you know what? I’m fine with that. Let me know in the comments what you think this cookie might be lacking.
