air fryer prawn toast

The fakeaway you’ll make on repeat – air fryer prawn toast hash browns

If you know me, you know I love an air fryer… and a potato… and a cheeky takeaway. Well, this recipe combines all three in the most glorious way possible. My air fryer prawn toast hash browns are the crispy, savoury treat you didn’t know you needed, until now. And the best part? They take just 40 minutes from start to finish. Honestly, you can have these golden bites on the table quicker than it takes for your local takeaway to knock on the door.

Why you need this recipe in your life

These little bite-sized beauties are everything you want from a fakeaway. They’re crunchy on the outside, soft and flavour-packed inside, and bursting with big bold flavours. Think juicy king prawns mixed with garlic, ginger, spring onions, soy sauce, sesame seeds, a touch of Chinese five spice, chilli flakes and a kick of sriracha – mixed with hash browns it’s just out of this world delicious. Yes, we’re basically levelling up your frozen potato stash into something so good it could be served as a starter in your favourite Asian-inspired restaurant.

And unlike your typical fried prawn toast, these are cooked entirely in the air fryer, which means no messy vats of oil, no heavy greasiness, and way less faff. You still get all the crunch, but without the splattering pan situation or that lingering fried smell. If you’ve ever wanted a lighter version of a takeaway favourite that still feels indulgent, this is it.

The benefits of using an air fryer

If you’ve been on the fence about air fryers, let me just say: they’re a game-changer. Here’s why these prawn toast hash browns work so well in one:

  • Crisp without deep frying – You get that golden crunch with just a spritz of oil.

  • Quicker cooking – No waiting for ovens to preheat or pans of oil to come to temperature.

  • Healthier option – Using less oil means these are lighter, but still taste rich and indulgent.

  • Consistent results – The hot air circulation ensures every prawn toast hash brown cooks evenly.

  • Less mess – No oil splashes, no clean-up nightmare. Just crispy deliciousness. And I hate washing up.

Basically, if you love easy air fryer recipes that save time, make less mess, and still taste like a treat, this one’s going straight to the top of your list.

When to serve them

These work beautifully as a starter for a fakeaway night at home, a side dish for something bigger (hello, Korean fried chicken burger 👀), or just as a little snacky snack with a cold beer on a Friday night. I’d even serve them as part of a small plates spread if you’re hosting friends. Guaranteed crowd-pleaser!

More fakeaway inspiration

If you’re anything like me and constantly craving your fave takeaway dishes but want to save a little cash (or just enjoy cooking them at home), then you’ll love my other recipes too. Try my Korean fried chicken burger, my loaded Korean fries, or stay tuned for the new dedicated “Fakeaway” section on my site. Because let’s be real: as much as I love Michelin-starred cooking, nothing hits the spot after a long day quite like a Big Mac, a bag of chips… or, in this case, a tray of homemade prawn toast hash browns that taste even better than the real deal. • 2 tsp sriracha
  • 1 egg white
  • 1 tsp Chinese 5 spice

  • 50g sesame seeds
  • Sliced red chilli, for garnish (optional)
  • Imperial

  • 2 cloves garlic, peeled and roughly chopped
  • Knob of ginger, minced or grated
  • 6oz raw king prawns
  • 2 tsp sriracha
  • 1 egg white
  • 1 tsp Chinese 5 spice
  • 1/2 tsp chilli flakes (optional)
  • 1 tsp light soy sauce
  • 10 frozen hash browns
  • 2 spring onions, finely sliced
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 2oz sesame seeds
  • Sliced red chilli, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Chuck all of your hash browns into the air fryer and cook for 15 minutes at 200ºc/400ºf. While the hash browns are cooking, tip the garlic, ginger, prawns, egg white, 5 spice, chilli flakes and soy sauce into a small blender or mini chopper with a big pinch of salt and pepper.
  2. Blitz to a paste, stopping to scrape down the sides if needed. Stir through the sliced spring onions (keep back a little for garnish later). When the timer is up for the hash browns, spoon around 1/2 tbsp onto each hash brown and use a spoon to flatten it out, so that it covers the entire top of the hash brown.
  3. Lightly brush the sesame oil on top of the prawn mixture and dip into the sesame seeds, pressing down lightly, so they're completely coated on top.
  4. Return the hash browns to the air fryer and spray with oil. Cook at the same temperature for another 7-8 minutes, until the sesame seeds are toasted and the prawn mixture is cooked through.
  5. Serve with a pot of sweet chilli sauce or your favourite dip for dunking, and sprinkles of chilli and spring onion.
