Grilled Watermelon

print recipe

This beautifully simple yet super tasty grilled watermelon recipe was inspired by my πŸ’˜ aphrodisiac πŸ’˜ series over on Instagram and I had to share this dish here.

This is a great recipe to add alongside your usual BBQ goods as it’s refreshing and bursting full of flavour. To make this juicy snack, I sliced my watermelon into a steak like shape (nice and chunky) and oiled it up. Once oiled, I added a sprinkling of salt, lime and chilli to really make the fruity flavours pop. I then dropped my steak onto a ferociously hot griddle pan (there’s something about those charred marks that make it taste even better) and made sure it was gorgeously coloured on both sides. You can top with whatever you fancy but I went for a balsamic glaze and crumbled feta. It was beautiful.

I used half a watermelon for this recipe and the remaining half went into my frozen watermelon margaritas πŸ‘€ Not like I needed an excuse to make margaritas but this worked out pretty nicely.

Disclaimer – the ingredient amounts are pretty vague as it really is a dish you season as you see fit!

What makes watermelon an aphrodisiac?

Within the juiciness of the watermelon you’ll find citrulline, which is an amino acid that relaxes and dilates blood vessels. This increases blood flow and lets just say it stimulates things. You can probs work out what kinda things. It replicates the magic of a certain blue pill that some people may be familiar with. I’m not gonna lie, this isn’t what I thought I’d be writing about on my website or just ever really, but I felt the need to share the benefits.

Tip – If you hate waste, save the watermelon pith and pickle it. You’re bound to have a glass jar you’ve kept and stored away ‘just in case’ so this is your chance to use it.

  • Mint leaves (optional)

Method

  1. Start by cutting your watermelon into thick steak-like slabs. Then you can remove the rind and pith.
  2. Brush your steaks with olive oil on both sides. Then sprinkle with salt, lime juice and chilli. You can add more/less here - season however you want!
  3. Heat your griddle pan. You want it FEROCIOUSLY hot.
  4. Once hot, carefully place your watermelon on the griddle. Once you can see those beautiful charred marks, flip it over and repeat. You may want to add extra oil at this point.
  5. Once both sides are charred, remove from the griddle and drizzle over your balsamic glaze and crumble your feta over the top. If you want a little extra colour, throw on a few chopped mint leaves for that final bit of OOMPH! Enjoy.
