Ultimate apple caramel pigs in blankets
You can’t beat a pig in a blanket
You really can’t though, can you? That perfect bite of juicy sausage wrapped in crispy bacon—it’s pure Christmas joy. But what if I told you we could take this festive favourite to the next level? Enter my Apple Caramel Pigs in Blankets. Yes, you read that right. We’re talking sweet, sticky apple caramel paired with savoury, smoky pigs in blankets for a little festive glow-up. This is your Christmas dinner showstopper, your Boxing Day snack hero, and maybe even your new obsession.
When I worked in restaurants, I picked up all sorts of little tricks and flavour combos that I’ve brought into my home cooking, and this is one of my absolute favourites. Back in my pastry days, apple caramel was one of those magic sauces that could transform a simple dessert into something extraordinary. But why stop at dessert? The balance of the caramel’s rich sweetness with the salty bacon is chef’s kiss. It’s fancy without being fussy, and that’s exactly what we need during the holidays.
For my American visitors
Now, let’s talk for a second about our friends across the pond. My American followers are probably scratching their heads right now because for them, pigs in blankets mean something entirely different. Their version is sausages wrapped in flaky, buttery pastry—a bit like a sausage roll but in canapé form. Delicious? Absolutely. But I’d argue that our bacon-wrapped beauties take the crown. There’s something about that smoky, crispy bacon paired with a juicy sausage that hits differently. Plus, when you add the caramel? Game over.
Get the oven on
This apple caramel recipe makes a generous batch, and let me tell you, you’re going to want every drop. Sure, you’ll only need a little drizzle for your pigs in blankets, but the leftovers are where the fun really begins. Picture it: caramel oozing over a warm apple crumble, drizzled on fluffy pancakes, or stirred into a hot cup of spiced cider for a cheeky festive treat. Or, if you’re anything like me, you’ll just keep sneaking spoonfuls straight from the jar. No judgment here.
One of the best things about this recipe is how easily it fits into your Christmas Day prep. You can whip up the apple caramel ahead of time—one less thing to worry about while the turkey’s in the oven. Then, when your pigs in blankets are sizzling away, you’re just a drizzle away from festive perfection. The caramel reheats beautifully, so don’t stress about timing. Honestly, anything that makes Christmas cooking easier while still making it feel extra special is a win in my book.
Oh, and don’t forget to keep an eye on my YouTube channel for more Christmas inspiration. I’ve got everything from decadent desserts to the ultimate roast potatoes (because we all know the spuds are just as important as the main event). Whether you’re hosting the whole family or just looking to elevate your festive nibbles, I’ve got you covered.
So, there you have it—Apple Caramel Pigs in Blankets. It’s sweet, it’s savoury, it’s sticky in all the right ways, and it’s guaranteed to be a hit with your holiday crowd. Serve them as a canapé at your Christmas party, pile them high on your festive dinner plate, or just eat them straight off the tray before anyone else gets a chance. However you enjoy them, one thing’s for sure: these little bites of heaven are about to become a new tradition. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Ingredients
- 12 thin chipolatas
- 12 rashers of smoked streaky bacon
- 1 litre of cheap apple juice from concentrate
- 75g unsalted butter, cubed
- Salt
Metric
Imperial
Instructions
- Pour all of your apple juice into a saucepan and set over a high heat. Bring to a boil and reduce until reduced by more than half. You should have around 200ml/7oz left in the pan, and it will become syrupy. Whisk in the butter a little at a time until you reach your desired consistency, then set aside in a warm place.
- Preheat the oven to 200ºc/180ºc fan/400ºf. Wrap a strip of bacon around each sausage in a spiral until it is fully covered. Line a baking tray with parchment paper and lay out each of the sausages, then bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes.
- Turn the sausages over and cook for another 10 minutes the other side. When the sausages are cooked and the bacon is crispy, brush over plenty of apple caramel. Sprinkle with flaky salt and serve up with your Christmas dinner.
