Viral Hand Ripped Chips
Is this viral recipe a SMASH or a PASS?
I’m back with another viral potato recipe that I just HAD to try and report back on…and this was a definite SMASH. I can absolutely see why these hand-ripped chips briefly took over the internet.
I first saw this via Woodyscafe_mcr and it went straight into my saved folder. So please go check out their page! The recipe below was inspired by Woodys Cafe, however the seasoning blend is my own concoction. And personally, the holy trinity when it comes to seasoning consists of onion granules, garlic and paprika. Nothing too elaborare, just flavours that really compliment each other. I also added salt and pepper, because that’s a must. Feel free to mix up the seasoning combo and comment below with your faves.
Can you explain the hand ripped part?
So basically, instead of cutting raw potato with a knife to begin your chip process, you instead bake your whole potatoes as you would a jacket potato. Then, wait for them to cool enough that you can handle them without third degree burns, and tear into them! You want to tear the baked potatoes into rough, chip like chunks. Once you’ve got your chippy chunks, you drop them into a deep fat fryer for that golden, crunchy finish.
As the potato has already been cooked, you’re basically looking to crisp up all those jagged edges and keep that soft, fluffy interior. Unlike your classic triple cooked chips, these only need one fry!
The result is kinda like if a jacket potato, classic chip and roast potato had a baby.
Can I add toppings?
I would actively encourage adding toppings, as these give loaded fries vibes. Sour cream, an excessive amount of cheese and crispy bacon would all make wonderful toppings. I also feel these chips would be great with gravy, or fashioned into a Canadian poutine. The possibilites are endless really and all whizzing through my head as I write.
What if I don’t have a deep fat fryer?
You could shallow fry instead! But please be careful around hot oil as it may spit when you drop the chips in. And I’d advise frying in batches to avoid the temperature of the oil dropping too much.
Can I watch a tutorial somewhere?
Funny you should ask. I have a full-on step-by-step tutorial of me recreating this recipe over on my YouTube channel that you can watch! Or even better, you can grab the ingredients listed below and have a little cook-along with me.
You can also watch me take on other viral classics such as squishy potatoes, the cheese-stuffed sweet potatoes and the lasagne-loaded jacket potatoes. It’s been a wonderful journey of recipe exploration, and I may have already made some of these again because, I mean, they are viral for a reason…SO PLEASE MAKE THEM. Let me know your thoughts in the comments or tell me what I need to try next.
